Conscience Money. Tender consciences arc indicated by the receipt of small sums of money as conscience money by several Government departments. The largest of these notified in the Gazette is £5 to the Railway Department, while the share of the Army Department is two sums of sixpence and twopcncc. And He Went! There had been heard for some time the sound of subdued but persistent talking at the rear of the court on Wednesday morning and at last the Magistrate said: "Put out that man doing the talking!" "Silence!" roared the court orderly. "Never mind about silence," said Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., "Put him out." The constable moved to obey the order but the culprit did not wait. He was soon away. Shooting Season. A drastic curtailment of the sea-> son for duck shooting is announced in the Gazette,, the season being from May 4 to 18. Whereas the season in the past has been two months it will be only a fortnight this year. For the second year in succession the season will open on the first Saturday instead of the first day of May. For pheasants the season will be from May 4 to June 30. The license fee will be the same as last ! year, namely 30s. Air Force Footballers. A sign of the unusual times through which New Zealand and the Empire are passing was shown by the presence at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Rugby Union of dleegates from the Royal New Zealand Air Force School at Bell Block, which intends taking part in some of the competitions. The delegates were welcomed by the president* Mr F. J. Nolan, Stratford.
Cricket Draw. The last games of the present season will he played on the Domain to-morrow. The matches will he Hillcrest v. Paroa and Whakatane v. P. and T. Both games should produce good cricket. 'High Pakeha Language.' "I was thinking perhaps I should have the licensed interpreter," said an elderly Maori appearing ni the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on a .judgment summons "Oh, 13 don't know," observed the Bench, "vou speak very well." "I understand English," said he in the box, "but I think I might not know some of the high pakeha language." "That's alright," was His Worship's comment, "I will see that counsel doesn't use any 'high pakeha language." One-Act Play Competition. The attention of our readers is drawn to an advertisement appearing in this issue announcing the i organisation which has been arranged by the Centennial Branch of the j Department of Internal Affairs in collaboration with the British Drama League and the Auckland Drama Council to give effect to the decision of the Government to include in its programme of National Centennial Celebrations a festival of community drama. The festival will take the form of a competition in which play acting groups in all parts of the Dominion should be interested Whakatane Star Football Club. All the following members of the above Club are urged to attend at the Domain on Saturday 13th at 3 p.m. also Tuesday and Thursday of next week at 7.30 sharp in preparation for the game between Whakatane Star and Taneatua to be held in> Whakatane on April 20th in aid of Patriotic Funds.
