To the average novice taking up bowls, learning how to control the bias on the bowl is enough, but if there were bias on the green, and kitt3 r as well, he would have something to complain about. Even nn experienced New Zealand bowler found he had a lot' more to learn about the art of boowling when he first played on one of the crowned greens of England. lie was Mr W. Lonsdale, recently returned to New Zealand after a tour through Britain and North America. He told :i Taranaki reporter that, while ilat greens were almost the general rule 111 the south of England, in the Midlands the most popular bowling game was played on a crowned green with a biased kitty. Such greens, he said, had a crown of from six to nine Indies, and sloped from the highest point in the centre to the sides and corners. The greens were about the size of an average flat green, but they were not marked out In rinks,, and the players , bowled over the greens ns their fancy took them. j
