Of Interest to Women

RED CROSS SOCIETY GIIGPE AUXILIARY BRANCH The first meeting of the Ohope Auxiliary Branch of the Red Cross Society was held in the Captain's Cabin, through the courtesy of Mrs Greagor, on March 28th. The meeting was convened by Mesdames Sullivan, Pearce and Sloane, Mrs Sullivan addressing a good audience on the work o£ the Red Cross Society. Officers elected for the branch were: —President, Mrs Bullen; secretary, Mrs Rayner. It was decided that Ohope should join the Whakatane Branch as an auxiliary and thanks were extended to Mr F. Mahy for the donation of £13 collected by him. Committees were formed to conduct a shop, knitting and sewing and a vote of thanks was passed to the convenors of the meeting. Second Meeting. There was a good attendance at the second meeting, held last Thursday. Further officers were elected as follows:—Vice-president, Mrs Kel vington; knitting, Mrs Davies; sewing, Mesdames Bracken and Roper: produce, Mrs Kelvington. Wool and sewing work was distributed to members and it was decided to hold fortnightly meetings, the date for the next being fixed at April l(sth.

AWAKERI DIVISION The monthly meeting of the Awaken Branch of the W.D'.F.U. was held recently, Mrs Luxton presiding over a good attendance of members. A motion of sympathy was -passed for Mrs T. McGougan in her recent bereavement. A grant was made to the Community Chest. After a discussion it was dccided not to conduct a stall at the Winter Show this year. It was decided ! to hold a dance in the Awakeri Hall in April to raise funds. An interesting feature of the afternoon was the impromptu speeches by members, Mrs Chapman being judged the winner. Competitions were won by the following:—Best flower: Mrs L. Carter 1, Mrs N. McDonald 2, Mrs Brizzle 3. Shortbread: Mrs N. MoDonald 1, Mrs Brizzle 2,. Mrs H. I.Tuke 3. Bottle of peaches: Mrs Brizzle 1, Mrs Luxton 2, Mrs N. McDonald, 3. A dainty afternoon tea, served by the hostesses Mesdames Carter, Wilson and McDonald brought the afternoon to a close. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE ! OPOTIKI ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Opotiki Women's Institute was held on March 30th. There "was a large attendance, presided over by the ipresident, Mrs J, T. Thompson. After the usual opening, the secretary read the minutes of the previous annual meeting and the treasurer presented the financial report. Officers for the year were elected as follows: —President, Mrs J. T. Thompson (re-elected); treasurer, Miss Sydenham (re-elected); secretary, Miss Neilson (re-elected); vicepresidents, Mesdames Fox, Maxwell and Lambert. The members of the committee were re-elected, with the addition | of Mesdames Fisher, Baird and Miss Salt. At this meeting Mrs Jerram of Nukuhou spoke on her experience on trains* in New Zealand and on the Continent. The president, secretary and treasurer were presented with charming posies. A very dainty supper was served by the hostesses.

WAI MAN A-NU K.UHOU (Own Correspondent) The April meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women's Institute was held in the Waimana Hall last Wednesday afternoon, whan Mrs N.Clark presided over a goo:l attendance of members. The President, on behalf of the members, w'shed Mrs Eagle and Mrs I. Savage, who are inmates of the hospital, a speedy recovery to heaV.h and hoped they would soon be able to attend the meetings again The agenda for the forthcoming annual Federation meeting to be held in Opotiki. was r°ad, and Mrs J. Wardlaw and Mrs Burnett were appointed delegates. Mrs C. Wykle was appointed delegate to attend the Dominion conference, to be held in Wellington. An appeal for fresh eggs from the Opotiki Hosp : tal was well respond-! Ed to, members stating they would assist as much as possible. Mrs I. Savage was the winner for most points in general competitions during the past yea-, and received a trophy kindly donated by Mrs F. Savage. The po'ato competition was won by Mrs F. Davies. Mrs R. Mrs Savage, on behalf of the committee and Glee Club, asked Mr? •Tohn Addison to accept a small gift in appreciation of her kindness in allowing the use of a room and oiano for meetings and Glee Club practise. The Irish Jig and a Tap Dance was given by Joyce Hodgson and Alice White and was much appreciated, the girls dancing very nicely Short talks by several members was given on the Exhibition,, and much enjoyed. A musical parcel was won by Mrs Bert Hughes. .The day's competitions were as follows; —Best (lower: Mrs T. Wardlaw (Dahlda) 1, Mrs Mitchell 2, Miss M. Woolfield a. 20 entries. Shortbread, plain, sugar: Mrs T. Wardlaw 1, Mrs Mitchell 2 r Mrs Hewitt 3. Shortbread, icing sugar: Mrs Gallagher 1, Mrs C. Wylde # 2, Mis H. Wardlaw 3. Most articles in a match box: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs F. Bell 2,. Miss Woolfield 3. Mrs N. Clark is kindly donating a prize for the runner-up for mosl points in the competitions this year. A dainty tea was served by the hostesses and a vote of thanks was passed to the judges and all who assisted with the programme, and the singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting. MEETING AT OTARA The monthly meeting of the Otara Women's Institute was held at the Otara Hall last week, Mr -W. A. Gault presiding. There was a fair attendance of members, quite a number of apologies being received on account of iVness. The meeting opened with the sing ing of the Institute Song and the reciting of the Women's Creed, after which the minutes of the previous meeting were read. When the usual business had been attended to, a very good programme was provided by the members, A vocal solo given by Mrs C. Black was much enjoyed and an amusing competition was won by Mrs Gault. The Roll Call* "A Talent I Would-Choose" received many and varied answers, and Mrs R. Hedley gave a most interesting talk on her trip to the Exhibition. A musical parcel game was won by Miss M. Lowe. The monthly competitions were tfs follows: —Jam jar of flowers: Mrs E. Young. Light plum jam: Mrs Bingham. Something to wear, eat and play with, total cost 6d: Miss Harrison,^ The hostesses for the afternoorf were Mesdames E. W. Stewart, K. Brown and P. Black. A hearty vote of thanks to E. Young and Miss Neilson, for ar-i ranging such a good entertainment and the singing of the National Anthem brought the afternoon to a close.
