HALF-CASTE MAORI FINED THEFT OF PIG DOG Determination to put a stop to petty thieving was expressed from the Bench in Te Puke Police Court on Monday -when Tiwara Hay word, a half-caste Maori of Maketu, appeared before Messrs T. E. Palmer and J. Persey, Justices of the Peace, on a charge of stealing a pig dog valued at £2, the property of Hector Robinson. It was stated in evidence by Constable Roberts, on a statement made by the accused, that the dog had Jbeen taken while accused was tinder the influence of drink* and only after the dog had followed him around the town for some time. The accused pleaded guilty to the charge, and expressed regret at his action in taking the dog. Both Justices, although bearing in mind that this was Hayward's first in inflicting a fine of £3 and jtosts, expressed their determination to put a stop to petty thiev ingj, which put people to both trouble, expense and inconvenience. Hay ward was allowed two weeks in which to pay the fine.
