READING TO EXCESS

FILM ACTRESS DIVORCED One of the plaints in the divorce petition of the husband of Bette Davis, the film star, was that "she read to an unnecessary degree, and refused to put a book down when guests were present." Much would depend, of course, on what constitutes reading ''to an unnecessary degree," states Lucio of the Manchester Guardian. An addiction to print cd matter that might be regarded as' excessive for a film star might be taken as a starvation diet for a don. Some unkind people might even argue that it is surprising to find n film star who bothers with books at all. In this case it may be the guests who bad the greatest grievance; it must be a little unusual in any walk of life for the hostess to go on reading when the party has assembled. On the other hand it seems unfair to condemn the practice out of hand without having seen the guests. It is just possible to conceive some Hollywood parties where even a railway timetable woukl be preferable to any attempt at rational conversation.
