SHARP QUAKES

THIS MORNING'S VISITATION WHITE ISLAND ACTIVE Three distinct shocks were felt shortly after 4a.m. this morning in the Whakatane district, followed by a series of smaller ones and concluding with another sudden jolt at 8 a.m. The initial quakes were of sufficient intensity to wake most people living at Ohope Beach and in the immediate vicinity of the town. They were accompanied by a low roar, and lasted for several seconds. The disturbances all appeared to come from an easterly direction, and in at least two instances were powerful to shake movables from shelves Seen in ttie early morning White Island was exceedingly active, the. white vapour cloud appearing much heavier and reaching a greater height than usual.
