THE ART OF HANDICAPPING It has been said that the art |c V handicapping is the bringing together by a carefully thought oul appointment of weights of a number of horses contesting a race, witl a view to the contestants finishing close together. Occasionally t-h( work of a handicapper is throwr out of alignment by the owner oi trainer electing to allow a candidate to carry considerably more weight than that assessed by th< handicapper. Such a case occurret at the recent Ohinemuri meeting Avhere in the Waitekauri Handicap Miss Jose weighted at 7.0 carriec 7.13 and to the surprise of many o the public won handsomely. If ix the first case the Vaals filly hac been handicapped at 7.13 investor would not have taken special noticc of the fact, but when the notification of 13Hlbs overweight was posted, many backers who considered the over poundage excessive, quickly decided to back something else. Some day,, in the dim and distant future, the New Zealand Racing Con ference in its wisdom, regulate the amount of overweight that may be carried.
