POWER CARS
POSITION IN BRITAIN lie I'ore the war there were 1,970676 private motor cars in use in Great Britain, but since then some hundreds of thousands of owners did not renew their licenses when they expired. It is estimated that at least 50 per cent of the cars formerly in use will be laid. up or sold. The black out petrol rationing and the increase in taxation of cars from I.)S per h.p. to —os are the main causes. In addition many car owners have joined the fighting forces. Car sales have dropped 80 per cent in England since the war started, and thousands of motor garages have been closed. In normay times the taxation on motor cars and motor cycles produced £17600,000 a year, and the petrol duty produced about £20*000,000.
