GOLF

MOKOR.UA CLUB SEASON OPENS The 1940 season was officially opened on Sunday the ljth March. The weather was perfect and there was a fairly large attendanse of members and visitors. After extending a welcome to the visitors and mentioning that the club was looking forward to a successful season, the president, Mr J. Stone, drove the first ball and declared the course open for play. On behalf of the visitors Mr J. Bullard, Captain of the Whakatane Club, apologised for the absence of the president,, Mr L. Luxton, and expressed the wish that the Mokorua Club would have a prosperous season. A mixed Canadian foursome over 13 holes was played, the winners being Mrs J. Stone and J. Bullard. Runners-up £li\s Jarrett and P. Campbell. For the surplus men a Bogey Match was arranged the winner being a visitor from Wellington, Mr Gleadow, with a net 54. the runner-up being J. Hignett a net 57. Several of the club members on final leave from the various military camps were present and were welcomed by Mr Stone. A iicav feature for a golf club opening day Avas ice-cream, donated by the president. -The day being rather Avarm this was much appreciated.
