FURTHER INFORMATION

WHITE ISLAND ARTICLE DATE OF THE ERUPTION In a letter to the BEACON on the subject of the recent article on .White Island, Mr C. W. Clark, of James Street,, has corrected us in the matter of the date of the eruption. which overwhelmed the thirteen workmen who were killed, and never heard of again. Mr Clark points out that this catastrophe occurred in 1913, and that the report was just ten years out in its statement. Wc thank Mr Clark for his information, and also for some other interesting facts which his letter contains. As one of the workmen there he has first-hand knowledge of the place, and states that on one of his visits since the works' were closed down, he, with Mr J. Harvey of Commerce Street,, \vere in time to find thousands of the fairljr rare Nautilus shells washed up on the beach. On another occasion, with Mr Geo. West he scrambleld completely around the island in search of a suitable anehorage for boats to work the extensive guano beds that lie on the North and North-eastern portions. None were discovered how ever, but some delightful picnicing spots presented themselves with beautiful bathing pools. He mentions that the Maori name for the Island is Waikari.
