Events of interest, the anniversaries of which occur this month are: Arawa friendlies defeated West Coast rebels at Maketu and Matata, March 7th, 18(54. Reverend Carl Volner murdered at Opotiki on March 5th r 1565. Colonel St. John's march Bp the Whakatanc River. Te Kooti attacked Te Poroma (Mill Farm) on March Bth and 9th> 1860. Te Ivooti looted Whakatane, burning stores and flour mill, on March 12th. 1869. First sod of the Rangi'ailn Drainage Scheme turned by the Hon R. McKenzie on M-jrch 16th, 1911. March, 1926. saw Matnta-Tanea-tua section of the East Coast Railway opened. March, 1923, opening of the Wlu*katane. District Hospital. March, 1928, East Coast Railwav officially opened at Tauranga by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates.
