FACING THE ISSUE
MR MENZIES' ATTITUDE The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Menzies, has adopted a proper and courageous attitude toward the question of conscription. In a recent statement, Mr Menzies said that he ■w?is not prepared to put the matter in the form of a referendum but that if he thought conscription justified, he would be prepared to go to the coulitry with it and stake his future upon the verdict. Thisnf* the course of a man believing in the justice of his cause and not merely seeking a means to place the responsibility' for art unpleasant decision upon other shoulders. No issue is more live at the present moment and none is being treated with so little real courage or logical consideration. Mr Menzies' statement bas placed it upon a higher plane, one in which the statesman identifies himself with the issue instead of merely dissociating himself from it.
