TE AROHA MEETING DECREASE IN FIRST DAY INVESTMENTS ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY The Jubilee meeting of the Te Aroha Jockey Club opened on Saturday. SOUVENIR BOOKLET TE AIIOHA JOCKEY CLUB HISTORY Appropriate to the occasion of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's Diamond Jubilee, a finely illustrated souvenir booklet entitled "Sixty Years of Racing," is being published. A comprehensive surA'ey of the history of Te Aroha racing has been made. There are chapters deal ing Avith every phase, including one on the late Sir William Herries, the Avinners of the Herries Memorial and Te Aroha Cups, and one shoAving the huge increase through the years of the stakes and totalisator figures. The publication AA-ill include the names of winners of all the principal races to the present, AA'ith. other details of interest race patrons. The occasion is more than the jubilee of the club, however. The volume Avill pay a tribute to Mr R. L. Somers, aalio Avill celebrate his thirtieth year as president, an office Avhich he has held for half the lifetime of the club. The legion of people aa'lio knoAV Mr Somers Avill Avish that last year's meeting be eclipsed this year. This Avould be another conA'incing proof, if any Avere needed, of the vitality of the Te Aroha Jockey Club, over the destinies of Avliich Mr Somers has so long presided.

FUNDS FOR THE TREASURY As the result of its race meeting last Aveek the Waikato Racing Club contributed to the Treasury the sum of £8154 lis for totalisator tax. Truly the sportsmen of this country are assisting in keeping up the revenue under the heading of racing. Tt is estimated that from the Auckland country circuit meetings the Government will receive in taxation the sum of £31,000. FOR STEEPLECHASING The Auckland owned Royal Abb, who earlier in the season was successful over hurdles is now being schooled over the big fences, and is showing aptitude for cross country work. FOR AUSTRALIA The Levin owner-trainer, Mr Wally Hume, left for Australia last week with Lady Tinkle, who displayed winning form at the recent Wellington meeting. The filly is very brilliant, and Empire City "Sports" are confident of her success on the other side. ANOTHER BEAU PERE In Wanganui the Beau Pere colt, Algerian, has shown up very prominently with . three successive wins. At the Waikato meeting the Beau Pere representatives Beau Repaire, Royal Descent, Silver Stick, Yogi, Worton, Bean Leon and Ivathbella were among the unsuccessful contestants, but may make better shoAvings at the Tc Aroha and Ohine nusri fixtures. AN OMISSION After King Rey's brilliant victory in the Storey Memorial Handicap it occurred to the stable that the Race !"ul representative had not been nominated for the Hcrri.es Memorial Cup, and in due course the connections Ave re duly reminded of the noticeable omission. After the publication of the acceptances there was regret in certain quarters that King Rev Avould not Imv* the chance of further adding to his Avin ning list, but it "was a case as careful sports are apt to remark "You can nominate a candidate for £1 up •n a certain moment, but aftev tha* u can't get in for a hundred."'

SUSPENSION OF RIDERS The suspension of jockeys H. Brougliton, H. N. Wiggins and V. Dye is affecting the prospects of certain horses engaged at the country circuit meetings. In some branches of Avorlc and sport the defection or tAvo or three is easily filled b3 r others coming forward, but this is not so in the case of registered jockeys, as the ranks of riders arc not 1 , always large enough to allov\ r for places to be filled. WELL BRED ONES A number of high class maiden thoroughbreds contested at the Waikato fixture. Joan Peel, runner-up to Acreman in the Trial Stakes, is by Hunting Song from Tinotere, by Nassau from Spangle, by Martian. On pedigree lines this filly should in due course register performances of a high standard. Moymell, also a contestant in the Trial Stakes, is a sister to Supcrex, by Night Raid. Glenbevan, Avho has lately been showing improved form is by Musketoon from Country Lady and comes from the same family as Hoariri, Taneriri, Manawlienua and HoroAvhenua. , sprinting fast Royal Chief is booked to leave for Australia during March. He is getting through a solid preparation at Riccarton and is sprinting brilliantly. From standing starts he has been dashing over three furlongs in 36secs, and evidently still retains his speed.
