THE CAT'S OUT
DARK SECRET REVEALED POLICE OFFICER'S CONFESSION "Perhaps you people of Whakatane don't realise that you very nearly did not get Constable Cunv mings twenty-nine years ago," said Inspector G.. Edwards, of Gisborne, at Thursday night's function. "At that time he was at Waihi and showed a strong disinclination to leave that town. However, one day his chief walked in and said, 'You're for it now, Tim'. 'Where is it?' came the reply. 'It's Whakatane,' rejoined the other. 'Then I'm not going,' said Tim. "However, Fate was inexorable and in due course Constable Cummings found himself in Whakatane, was greeted by the retiring stable, who cheerfully remarkei.l, 'In six month's time you will be in a Mental Hospital if you stick in this place. Look at the •wreck they've made of me.' "But,'" continued Inspector Edwards, "Constable Cummings has been here twenty-nine years and by the look of him I don't think he's fit for the Mental Hospital yet."
