A TRULY PROGRESSIVE CLUB The Hay of Plenty Jockey Club now ranks as one of the progressive clubs of the province. Two seasons ago it laid a new course on distinctly modern lines, and last year erected a very commodious grandstand. Year by year the patronage of the racing public shows' gratifying increases,, and for the meeting next month larger stakes than ever have been allotted; the total for the two days being £.'SIOO. The Tauranga Cup will be Avorth £500 and the Flying Handicap £2.10. It is but a feAV short years ago that the eight races on a day's programme Averc not worth more than these two amounts. This is just vet another case of "nothing succeeds like success." TO EE SPELLED The three year old Gladynev, lias been showing distinct signs of soreness in his w. rk, and it is feared that he Avill haA*c to be treated to a lengthj* spell in the paddock. The trouble is in one of his fetlock joints Mr Colin Anderson's representative, by reason of his third in the Wellington Centennial Cup, Avas deemed to have an excellent chance of Avilining the Herries Memorial Cup, and the present occurrence must be lather disconcerting- to his owner. A DIFFERENT DEPARTMENT

One of the surprises of the Rotorua meeting was in the result of the Tarawera High-weight in which Haile Boy, hitherto a moderate performer only, carried 11.4 and Erination 9.2, a difference of 301bs in favour of the latter, who lately in hurdle races has been carrying 13.5, with Haile Boy near the 10.0 mark. Thus over the. timber Erination has to allow Haile Boy up to 171bs, while on the flat the latter has to allow the chestnut 301 bs, a difference o! no less than 77lbs, or very nearly three-quarters of a hundredweigU. Perhaps the explanation of the appnrent anomalous position lies in the fact that hurdle and flat racing are in altogether different departments of racing.
