'HOPS STAKES FOR HOPS'
Darwin, in the Northern Territory, has the distinction of Australia's most novel contest — ''hops stakes lor hops"; in otner words, frog-hopping contests with bottles of beer as prizes for winning owners. The contests were organised by members of the Commonwealth Works Department staff, and thus they gave Darwin residents a source of amusement from the myriads of frogs which .cause sleepless niglus after the rains. Those eligible to enter frogs for races included members of the army navy and Aii* force. Artificial means or urging competitors, such as the use of electric needles, batteries, fire crackers, or pins were banned. The contests were held on a path leading to the door of the single men's quarters at the Works Department. Rules were drawn up and a starter, clerk of the course, judges and stipendiary stewards were appointed. Spectators vero charged a bottle of beer admission fee. Forty of the best frog specimens were entered. The champion nt champions was W. Gray's Gertrude.
