APPEAL FOR RECRUITS
Sir,- —We have heard the Prime Minister appeal for volunteers and also we have the newspapers request Lng young men to join up with the Forces for Overseas Service. Surely we should not have so much appealing. The old spirit of 1914-1918 is not yet dead. It is only lying dormant, and wants a little stirring up. The young men of to-day are surely just as patriotic as the 1914 men. It is very hard to understand why the young men are holding tire, especially now that the First Echelon is overseas. That should be some inducement to every single man to volunteer if his circumstances will allow him. We are not out to judge any man, some would like to join but their circumstances will not allow them just at present, others may have nothing to stop them, and it would be very gratifying to the old soldiers to see Whakatane keep its full quota for each Echelon. t Yours etc., MAIN BODY, Ist Division N.Z.E.F.
