FREEDOM STATION

DEFIES THE GESTAPO One of the greatest mysteries ov the war—the story of the German Freedom broadcasting station—is the subject of a booklet. Foi? three years the Gestapo have conducted a relentless hunt for the station, yet it continues to broadcast unhindered. The author of the booklet, "Freedom Calling" (Frederick Muller. Ltd) who describes himself as the "representative in Great Britain of the Freedom Station," writes: — "Thousands of voluntary helpers keep the station informed, and up-to-date. and send in 'hot' news. There is no broadcasting House. Its technical staff consists of three or four people, but its contributors number thousands. It has the greatest reporting staff in the world." This suggests tlhat the station is mobile, and evidently the Nazis have the same idea, for one day all cars leading to Berlin were stopped. A few days later all furniture vans in Wucrttemberg were held up. Then people noticed as udden increase in the number of police boats on the Rhine—barges were stopped and searched. * Still the broadcasters capture.
