INCOME TAX
ISSUE OF NOTICES INCREASED LEVY Demands for the payment of income tax for the year ended oti> March 31, 1939, were received by many taxpayers in Whakatane -last week. The demands include the !•>> per cent increase in taxation imposed by legislation several months-, ago and which Avas not embodied 1 ; in the figures when the assessments that precedc demand notices wereissued. The issue of demand notices will be the largest in New Zealand's history, for legislation and increased wages have combined to swell tbe--number of taxpayers. Ihe levy will also be by far the heaviest evermade on the community. The receipt recently of assessments indicated to taxpayers that' they areexpected to contribute increased sums to the Consolidated Fund, but some who then neglected to add lo per cent to the total now realise just what this represents by way of added contribution..
