Preserving Maori Pa. The remnants of a Maori pa located on the grounds of the Miisick Memorial Radio Station at Tamaxi are to be preserved in response to representations made by the historic memorials committee of the Auckland Historical Society to the Public Works Department. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Sempic, replied to the convenor of the committee, Mr T. Walsh, that the Department had been able to placc the proposed car park some 30 yards further south, outside the area covered by the old Maori fortifications, and there was no necessity for further earthworks in connection with the grading of the site for the memorial building. It was proposed to rebuild portion of the old rampart adjacent to where the road crossed it, and while this was being done, the trench would be cleared of blackberry. The Minister suggested that the committee should confer with the Department's district engineer at Auckland so that a drawing of an entrance to a Maori pa could be submitted for further consideration. The society, he added, with the assistance of the engineer, could doubt less compile a plan of the old pa, which might be suitable for hanging in the memorial building. The Department -has called for tenders for the building in concrete of the trans mitting station. The successful tenderer will be required to finish the contract in six months.
