MAORIS AND LIQUOR
The alarming number of prosecutions against Maoris in the Whakatane court recently has given rise to considerable comment. The wide range of the offences is another disquieting feature- It will be noted however that in practically all instances the. root cause is "Drink!" Here is the origin of most of the offences of which the Maoris have been guilty, and here again, if we have a person or group strong enough to take the matter in hand, lies the solution. True we have the control imposed by the illegal sale of liquor to the Maoris in other than licensed premises, also the after-hours edict, but the fact remains that the mounting list of offences by Maoris pleading drunkenness continues unchecked. It is not possible to find, or initiate in Whakatane some recreational establishment, or institution, where these young fellows will be able to relax and occupy themselves in some usful and healthy manner, instead of frittering away their young manhood by ovei indulgence.
