THE HOUSING PROBLEM

Houses are still at a premium in Whakatane. With all the building going on in the Borough it has been anticipated that at least the position would be less aggravated by the New Year. Apparently however there are still many families awaiting adequate housing facilities. The overflow at Ohope beach is &ill considerable and the number of residents living there through lack of accomodation in the town is home out by the children who leave each morning by 'bus. for school. The next batch of Government houses will be ready for release in March. In view of the sixty applicants for the last four, it is obvious that even these eight dwellings will not relieve the position to any marked extent.
