GOOD HARVEST
WHEAT IN CANTERBURY
Canterbury's wheat which two
months ago appeared headed for ruin in the drought, is now yielding a splendid harvest, Avhich is expected to average at least •>() bushels to the acre. | * Good soaking rain on November ; 22, and again on December 20, eonij pletely altered the pieturc on Canterbury wheatlands, Before the rains many mid-Canterbury and south Canterbury crops appeared to be finished, or with prospects of yields of round about 15 bushels., North Canterbury, which lias had more rain than the south, it is expected, return better yields than other parts of the province, but the average, according to an estimate made by Mr R. McGillivray, fields superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, will_.be 30 bushels | or more. There has been a similar recovery of crops in Marlborough, where the : yields will now be much lighter than was expected at the beginning of December. Barley also is looking well, and one farmer has harvested ! 75 bushels to the acre. Other higher 1 yields are reported.
