MAORI MEMORIAL
INSCRIBED PLAQUE AT HEADS COMMEMORATING THE MATATUA CANOE I At a representative meeting of Maori elders during the week-end it was decided unanimously to erect a memorial plaque at the Heads, to mark the approximate landing place of the lamed Malatua canoe. The plaque will be inscribed in both pakelia and Maori and will be unveiled at the ceremony held in connection with the opening of the Centennial Park on March I'ith. The reading matter with perhaps a few minor alterations will be as under:— Matatua Canoe Memorial On this sandy spot landed the Matatua canoe of the main migration of the Maori people from Hawaiki in or about the year 1340. 1 u ki konei a Matatua waka o tc heke nui mai i Hawaiki o te iwi Maori. Te kapene ko Toroa. Nga iwi o runga, ko Ngatiawa, Tuhoe Te Whakatohea, Ngaiterangi.
