INTOXICATED MOTORIST •£25 FINE INFLICTED When Victor Joseph Elder, aged 26 a mill hand of Te Whetu, appeared before Messrs G. A. Brabant and G. ' G. Lucas, J'sP., in the Police Court on Monday he faced a charge of being intoxicated whilst in charge of n motor car on the-Rotorua-Tc Teko Road on Saturday, February 3rd. Accused, Avho was not represented, pleaded guilty. Sergeant M. Farrell said Elder left Rotorua with a man called Hartley ■as a passenger. It was their intension, to proceed to Ohope. Before leaving they had consumed a fair amount of liquor and also took some in the ear. Reaching Te Teko accused had More drink and handed over the driv Sng of the car to Hartley.. There ,\v?% a gbrious accident at the Wliakat'ne/Rivcr bridge, and the driver a particularly severe injury. Defendant was not driving at the time but had been shortly before. He had been examined by Dr. Cole, who had certified that Elder was so intoxicated as to be incapable of driving a car. ""Have you anything to say?" asked the Bench. "Oh, I don't, know," said accused. "What's the fine?" "The penalty," said the Bench, "is lip to £I.oo'fine or three months' imprisonment." Accused: "I had more drink at Te Teko, that is why I changed over." "The Court considers these cases "very serious," said the Bench, "You will be fined £25 and your license cancelled for two years." One month was allowed in which to pay.
