MEETING ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS (By Zetland) Consequent upon numerous showers on Saturday the racing track became heavier during the afternoon and there were more than the usual number of surprises registered. Racing opened with the Trial Stakes for which British Talent was installed a firm favourite. Victory went to the Illumination representative Right Royal, and the monetary return to his backers on the win machine was over half a score. In the O'rewa Hurdles Dauber 011 his Thames form, was the leading fancy but when it came to racing nothing had the semblance of a chance Avith Knight of Australia, who simply rcA'elled in the soft going and Avithout being fully extended Avon by twelve lengths from Centaurus and Dauber. Gold Wings and Silver Stick Avere the leading fancies for the Ferry Handicap, but the To AAvamutu candidate Te Takina Avho has struck form, never left the issue in doubt in, the final run. The Te Aroha oaviied Paxeno Avho finished third, may have been closer up if her run had been made earlier. Patrons Averc Avell on the mark in the Takapuna Cup betting for the two faA'ourites Our Jean and Fils de Vaals, finished first, and second, Avhile the Goldfields Cup Avinner, MintlaAV, filled third position. Royevrus stripped light in condition, but nevertheless ran a good race, but Roj r al Appellant ridden by L. J. Ellis, neA'er looked a Avinner. The thrilling feature of the race Avas the brilli'ant finishing effort of the winner. The bracketed pair, Night Beam and Night Pilot Averc the popular fancy for the Calliope Handicap. The Raeeful filly Gay Miss attempted to make every post a winning one. and entering the home turn had a clear lead of two lengths. At the distance post Gilchrist brought out the Avhip 011 Sir Cameron, who responded gamely and 50yds from Lite post caught tha leader, avlio howcA r cr was not being ridden out . In a very close finish Sir Cameron prevailed; and his backers collected a return of nearly a score. The Wynyard Ulatc Avas Avon by the favourite OreliOj aa t lio handled the going better than expected. The Te Puke ctwned Greek Queen filled J* second place Id 111 her very late run affected her chance of fighting out a tight finish Avitl; the Limond-Water-Avings colt. Another racing thrill eventualed in the Zealand!a Handicap in winch the fnvourHe division comprised Sax ::• i; 'ic-\ Orwcre, Brazen Bjl-.I a;io : Sebrof. In a briliiant finish Brazilian who had liocn purchased onVy a few days ago by Mrs H. Roberts, pro vailed by a short head. The running was mud:- throughout by G. Gilchrist on Silver Quex., but the last hundred yards found her weakening and the sister to Round Up had to be content Avith third place.
