SPORT OF BOWLING " GAMES AT WHAKATANE Anniversary week-end was a red-letter occasion for the local bowlers, the Whakatane green receiving a heavy patronage for the three days. The most impori tant event was the annual Returned Soldiers game which took place 011 Sunday and attracted a record number of bowlers from all parts of the district. In spite of the broken and unsettled weather, all games were finished in good time and the play was thoroughlj" enjoyed. On Monday the two Opotiki Clubs visited the local greens and played off two friendly games in both of which the locals claimed victory by a substantial margin. Within the club itself the singles and pairs championships are now commencing and some fairlj r keen matches are anticipated.
diggers take a hand STEEL HELMET TO TANEATUA Teams from Rotorua, Taneatua, Tauranga, Opotiki, Tc Fuke and Wha katane competed in the annual lieturned Soldiers' contest for the celebrated 'Steel Helmet' which this year went to Taneatua after a Stirling play off with Caisley's local stalwart};. Fourteen teams took part, and in welcoming the visitors, Mr L. W. Luxton, of Awakeri, regretted the absence of the secretary, Mr George Peebles of Taneatua, who had re-en-listed in the present Avar and was now in camp. He also thanked the Whakata'ne Club for making the greens available and trusted that one and all would have an enjoyable day.
It is interesting to recall that the tournament last year wa,s won by 3 team skipped by Mr Peebles who has been most prominent in pushing the fixture to its present high state ol popularity. In Section A, Foster, the winner notched five wins. Other details were Burgess (Opotiki), Borrie (Rotorua) Littlejohn (Whakatane) Knaggs (Tauranga) 4; Pole (Tauranga) 3V2; Burgess (Whakatane) :>nd Spratt (T'e Puke) 0. Section 13 shoAved three ties witl Chester (Te Puke), Caisley (Whaka-|
tanc) and Corbett (Rotorua) with 4 Raines each. In the play-off Caisley defeated the other contenders ' and went on to try conclusions with Foster. Section details Avere; Hunt (Taneatua) 3%; Currah (Whakatiane), Simcocks (Tauranga) Madsen (Opotiki) IV2 • The linal saw Gee, Torrie, Wilson • and Foster defeat Shapley, Warner.. Norris and Caisley 6-4. The presentations were made by Mr Luxton, all members of the winning team receiving a Dalton mug. The thanks of the committee are due to Messrs A. Hayter and T. Cucksey for donations and to the secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association for the keen manner in which he worked the tourney to a successful conclusion.
MONDAY'S GAMES WHAKATANE 126, OPOTIKI 83 Vice-president L. Littlejolm welcomed the visitors from Opotiki and extended to them the club's hospitality. Mr R.'Hedley for the Opotiki members returned thanks. Refreshments during both morning and afternoon sessions were in the capable hands of a ladies committee who are to be warmly plimented on their work.
