"OPEN SESAME" IN SHADOW TALK
Civilisation has brought a new kind of door to Melbourne. Installed in a Collins Street insurance building, it tricked customers all the morning. This remarkable door works on the "magic eye" principle. As you walk up to it, it swings open. Very convenient —and a trifle disconcerting! Most people who approached the new door stretched out a hand to push it open, but before the hand reached it the supremely courteous door opened. No one actually fell over, but several people stopped suddenly and. suspiciously to see what the door would do next. Then they passed through warily. The mechanism is worked by a "magic beam" between two short pillars, through which you pass as you approach the door. There arc other pillars on the far side to keep the door open until you are safely through. All in all, the door is a grand idea; but it is to be hoped that civilisation will spread no farther in the same direction. A milk bar with a "magic eye" that poured a long "health drink" in|o you as f:oon as you sat on the slool might .lead to sonic nervous breakdowns. Let the matter rest at door.s!
