ANNUAL PICNIC

RETURNED SOLDIERS ASSN. OUTING AT THORNTON The Whakatane Returned Soldiers Association held a most successful picnic on the Thornton Domain on Monday the 2<)th inst. It was very unfortunate that the weather was very overcast early in the morning and no doubt kept a greatj numbei of people away, but in spite ol the iwcather the gathering was very gratifying. This year the Returned Soldiers combined with the Women's Institutes. The day was spent in races for grown-ups and children, Each child received a small prize and bag of sweets, and there were numerous tugs of war, most of the honours going to the Otakiri end. The married women's and the single avoinen's races were very exciting and some very close iinishes were the result. In this district wo have some coming New Zealand champions in both married and single women, the most exciting race of the day was of course the Diggers race,, they knew what was at the winning tape and all made their best effort. The Doyle Competition was won by Mrs Fulford of Otakiri, and the Sox Competition was won by Mr C. Smith, Junior.
