BUSINESSMEN'S INTERESTS
WITH the close of the first month of the New Year, the time is fast approaching for the re-formation of the Whaka,tane Chamber of Commerce. There could be no greater example of the crying need for such a body as the town of Whakatane offers. Grown beyond all recognition, it is hard for residents of even a short period to realise that it is the same centre in which they first decided to settle. In fact there has been a positive danger in this very expansion, for the ordinary facilities enjoyed by most country towns have likewise been, outgrown and in many cases left far behind. There be no task for whidh a live Chamber of Commerce would be better suited than that of co-operating wlith the local authority to b.uild up and equip the town wjich all the amenities it should possess. Already many businessmen are in hea,rty agreement, and readily endorse the arguments set out above. There are others again anxious to serve in a practical way towards the construction and running of the Chamber and its activities. Why then the delay?
