HAYFIELD FATALITY
INQUEST RESUMED CORONER'S VERDICT The adjourned inquest into the death of Mr Alfred William Atkinson, who was killed at Edgecumbe last week when a haystacker fell over, Avas resumed before Mr G. A. Brabant, J.P., on Monday. A further witness, Horace Alexander Richardson, a sharemilker in the employ of Mr J. B. Gow, Edgecumbe. was called and his evidence corroborated previous witnesses' accounts of deceased's movements on the hay-field immediately before being struck by the stacker. Dr, E. Tewsley Dawson said that deceased was admitted to hospital at mid-day on the 10th. On admission the patient was profoundly shockcd and had a very weak pulse. His condition improved somewhat during the afternoon but about 5 p.m. he collapsed and died at about 1." p.m. In witness' opinion death was due to shock following the accident. The Coroner returned a verdict that Alfred William Atkinson died in the Whakatane .Hospital and his death was due to injuries and shock suffered when the hay-stacker accidentally fell over.
