BLASTING ACCIDENT
MAORI INJURED DELAYED EXPLOSION AT AWAKERI Panapa Raiahi, an employee at the Public Works Department's quarry at Awakeri, was admitted'to the Hospital on Monday afternoon suffering from a haemorrhage into the left eye and concussion of the eye-ball, as the result of a delayed explosion of a blasting charge. At about 2.30 on Monday Mr Ratahi placed three shots into the quarry face. Two of these exploded and the otfjier failed to fire. Mr Ratahi put in another charge over tiie top of the one that had failed. The fresh charge fired and Mr Ratahi went to investigate the reasons for the non-explosion of the other. He was warned by his workmates to keep clear, and took shelter in a small dip a short distance away. After approximately ten minutes the 'dud" charge fired and Mr "Ratahi was seen to be hurt. He was "Conveyed to Dr Appleby's surgery and after treatment there was admitted to the Hospital.
