HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING HELD LITTLE DISCUSSION The monthly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board took place oil Thursday in the Borough Chambers. Mr J. W. Sumner presided over Messrs L. Buddie, F. J. Burt, A. F. McCougan, and C. A. Suckling. Apologies were received from Mrs McCracken and Messrs R. W. Selio(ield and F. J. Savage, who were granted leave of absence from the meeting. A report from the Visiting Committee. Messrs Buddie and Burt, was submitted and It discussed the state of the kitchen garden, which it considered to be unsatisfactory. Mr Burt moved that a sub-committee consisting of the Chairman and Messrs Buddie, Suckling and McGougan be formed to investigate the position with regard to the kitchen garden and hospital grounds generally. This was seconded by Mr McGougan and carried. Additions to Annexe. A letter and sketch plan dealing with the proposed additions to the Maternity Annexe were received from the Board's Architect. Mr McGougan moved that it be left wi'th the Medical Superintendent to confer with the architect with regart* to preparing the new plan to be submitted to the Finance Committee for approval before being forwarded to the Department of Health. This Was seconded by Mr Burt and carried . Superintendent's Report. The Medical Superintendent, Dr, E. Tewsley Dawson, reported that during the past month work on the men's ward and the Medical Superintendent's residence has been going on slowly. The residence is now completed and Dr Dawson is occupying it. The private road has been partly formed but cannot be completed until the sole of the grass has beeln,' broken up by discing. The grounds round the house are ready now for attention and the question of erecting a shed for wood and coal and garden tools should be gone into again. The hospital was decorated for Christmas and a visit from Santa Cl'aus helped to create the atmosphere of Christmas for the patients. The storm which occurred during last week-end blew down the high water tank, but as this is not used now it will not required to be replaced. A few tiles were blown from the roof of the Women's Ward and broken, as also were three windows in the Isolation Block. The hospital escaped any major damage. 'T intend commencing my annual leave on January 27th, and have made arrangements for Dr Appleby to act as Medical Superintendent during my absence," concluded Dr. Dawson's report. Statistics for Month. The statistics for the month of December show that there were 100 admissions to the hospital during that period and the same number of discharges. There were 59 inmates on December Ist, deaths during the month were three and s(i people were in on December 31st. Seven major operations were performed and minor operations totalled 29. The daily average of inmates for the month was 58. Accounts for Payment. Accounts for payment totalling £4,641 0s 2d, made up of £3,121 16s lOd on Maintenance Account and £1519 3s 4d on Capital Account, Avere passed on the motion of Mr Buddie, seconded by Mr McGougarL A vote of thanks was accorded the Whakatane Borough Council for the use of the meeting room and a vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
