ASSAULT CHARGE
MAORI ATTACKS NEIGHBOUR Following an absence of several months due to illness, Mr E. L. Wal ton. S.M., officiated on the Bench at the monthly sitting of the Te Puke Magistrate's Court on Thursday. A charge of assault was preferred against Toby Kameta Poihipi, of Maketu. Entering a pica of guilty, Poihipi was defended by Mr A. J. Jamieson. It was stated in evidence that as Myers was proceeding to work and pacing Poihipi's home, the defendant rushed out and struck him, knocking him to the ground, Avhen he was further assaulted. On behalf of the accused, Mr Jamieson stated that there had been illfeeling between the two men for some time, originating when a number of cattle had been driven on to the rocks at Maketu. There had already been one exchange of blows, he said, when Myers had been the aggressor, but in the case now before the Court, Poihipi admitted striking the lirst blow, no doubt still aggrieved at the attack on him previously. Poihipi was convicted and fined 12s and costs..
