CAR JOURNEY
WOMAN KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS
VICTIM ENDEAVOURS TO PROTECT HER It transpires that Tukchu and Maaka, who was better known in the district as Johnny Marks, had set out for the Te Tcko township to call for a Mrs McManus a threequarter caste Maori with whom Tukehu had been living. They found Mrs McManus outside the hotel and she entered the car. It is suggested that whilst driving from there to the house of Mita Makihei, which lies about threequarters of a mile back from the Matahina Road, Tukehu struck Mrs McManus several times. Maaka remonstrated . When the car stopped at the gate near Mita Makihei's house, Tukehu attempted to drag Mrs McManus, who by then was unconscious, from the car. Maaka attempted to protect the woman and threw his arms around her in an effort to keep her in the car. Tukehu then struck at Maaka, inflicting severe and fatal injuries.
