MURDER AT TE TEKO
YOUNG MAORI VICTIM ASSAILANT COMMITS SUICIDE MAN HUNT YESTERDAY The first major crime in this district for many years occurred at Te Teko on Saturday night when Johnny Maaka, aged 20, was the victim of a vicious assault and died as the result of severe head injuries inflicted by a blunt instrument, thought to be the crank handle of a car. The assailant, Rangi Tukehu Tukehu, known as Robert Tukehu, aged 27, farmer, of Te Teko, escaped and at 12.45 p.m yesterday committed suicide, by shooting, at Tikatere, near Rotorua. A police party, comprising Sergeant M. Farrell and Constables F. M. Fuller and R. A. A. Prater, made enquiries all Saturday night and their task was made more difficult by the miserable weather conditions prevailing. At noon yesterday they were reinforced by etective-Sergeant Waterson, of Gisborne, and the officers prosecuted their investigations throughout the day.
