NATURAL MONUMENTS

A recent statement of the Hon, F. Langstone, Commissioner of State Forests, in regard to the listing and preservation of historic trees, has received the hearty approved of the Forest and Bird Protection Society's executive,, but members have expressed the opinion that the movement should have a wider scope than trees, and should be concerned with the preservation of various natural monument's. This mater was reviewed in the presidential address at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute, in 1928. "Some broader outlook than the mere preservation of vegetation is desirable," stated. "Some office or duty should be instituted, not jlecessarily entailing the appointment of new officers, but father the creating of new duties to be appropriately laid on the shoulders of resident local officers, whose duty it JHftd be to safeguard for posterity what are called in othe§; countries natural monuments." A good example for New Zelland has been set in Great Britain by the National Trust foil Pla'cies of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty. This national organisation has an excellent record of achievements- It has managed to save many historic landmarkjs and beauty-spots which were threatened with damage or destruction by the ordinary "march of progress."
