Men on Subsidy. The Mayor advised the Council! that more men would be available for Scheme 1 :iB work provided that the council subsidised the wages of the men to the extent of 11/4 pier week for every man. His Worship stated that the Borough Foreman was /of the opinion that the men would be useful. However, it had to be stressed that the men could nob be employed without the subsidy from the council.. Gr Canning thought it wise to get three men on the 138 Scheme. Cr Shapley said that there was plenty of work for the men and the council should take advantage of the offer. It Avas moved and seconded that the council employ three men on this scheme, this number to include the man already on the staff. New Yard. Cr Shapley drew the council's attention to the need for new sheds for the trucks and equipment. Not only could the sheds be made more presentable for the public, they could also be made more useful to the Borough Foreman. Cr Canning said - that the existing yard was a disgrace to the borough. Something would have to be done. It was necessary that the coun cil should protect its assets. The matter was left to the Works Committee. Resignation of Councillor. A letter stating that he wished to resign from the council was received from Cr F. Pricleatrx. His Worship the Mayor adviset| the council thai Cr Prideaux would not take leave of absence and he regretted that the vacancy would have to be filled. His Worship pointed out that Cr Brabant had asked for leave of absence but if an election had to be held to fill one vacancy it would be better for Cr Brabant to resign and both positions could be filled. "It is unlikely that Cr Brabant will be back before the nextj municipal elections," said the. Mayor, "and if he i? away he can't stand, then." His Worship thought that the only course open to the council! was to accept Cr Prideaux's resignation with regret. : In seconding that Cr Shapley said he considered it fitting that the council should send a letter to Cr Prideaux, expressing the hope that he would soon return. "Councillor Prideaux's life on the council was short but useful," said Cr Sullivan, who supported Cr Shapley's suggestion.
