INSURANCE QUESTION
RE-EMPLOYMENT OF WORKER A letter from an Insurance Company concerning an injured env ployee of the Council, Mr L. \V. Ormond. Avas received at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night. The letter stated that the specialists who had recently examined Mr Ormond • of the opinion that he would be fit for light duties, such as meter reading, in about two months time, : and asked whether the Council could : find such light employment for him. His Worship the Mayor said that Mr Ormond could not undertake the job of meter reading in the Bor- < ough as it was impossible to cover the area on foot and the doctor's advice was that he should not ride a bicycle. "There is no work that we can, ofTer Mr Ormond," said His Worship. "I feel that we are under a morai obligation to him as he suffered injury while in our employ." Cr Shapley said that the council "would have to consider whether it |s.vas helping Mr Ormond or the Insurance Company. In the meantime '•■he council had two months in which to think it over. Cr Canning thought that if Mr ■Ormond Avere re-employed he Avould not be insured in future. "If he meets Avith another accident AA r e will be responsible," said Cr Canning, •who moved that the council write to the Insurance Company requesting advice as to Avliether they would cover Mr Ormond with the rest of the employees. The matter Avas referred to the Finance Committee Avith a recommendation on the lines of Cr Canning's motion and a further recommendation that it informs the Insurance Company that there Avas no suitable employment at present available for Mr Ormond.
