TURF-TOPICS
(By Zetland) CHANGE OF PLANS Arrangements in regard to Tc Hero being brought back to Te Awamulu have now been changed. It lias been decided to offer the son of Heroic for sale by public auction at Sydney on January IM). As a three year old Te Hero, an outstanding galloper, could have been sold for 10,000 guineas, but owing to his behaviour at the starting barrier, he may not now realise anything like that sum. It is here worthy of note that Heroic, when racing, was also a stubborn one at the barrier, and had to be retired from the turf earlier than otherwise would have been the case. He was Ihcn sold to Mr C. P. Kellow for the then record price in Australia of 16,000 guineas, and for some years topped the sire's list of winning horses in Australia. A LIBERAL DONATION The Wellington Racing Club has donated the sum of £500 to the National Patriotic Fund, and £250 to the Red Cross. Then once again a racing institution has given a lead to sporting and other societies in assisting worthy objects. Many racing patrons in this Dominion. will doubtless feel pleased at the fact of the sport they patronise ever being readj* to assist financially in time of stress. MALAGIGI AT TRENTHAM J. T. Jamieson's Malagigi has arrived at Trentluim in view of competing in the Wellington Centennial Cup. He is in the pink of condition, and is confidently expected to run accordingly. Jamieson is a very astute judge of the noble thoroughbred and would not be likely to bring a candidate over from Sydney unless he had an excellent chance of victory. Malagigi will be ridden by M. McCarten, who states that it is recognised that the Puladin representative will be pitted against some very line handicap performers.
THE BIGOT GIVEN AWAY The Manawatu owned, The Bigot, who has evidently tired of racing, has been given away by Frank Newman to T. A. Duncan. What his fulure programme is to be has not yet been decided, but probably he may be allotted a lengthy holiday. LOU ROSA'S NEXT OUTING The Foxbridge two year old Lou Rosa, is none the Avorse for his two races at tlie Auckland meeting, and is again executing very satisfactory track work. His next appearance in public will be in the Champagne Stakes at Ellcrslie during Easter week. BEAULIVRE IN AUSTRALIA On Wednesday last Beaulivre join ed George Price's racing team at Randwick. Although the Beau Pere —Pass Book representative suffered defeat by Beau Vite at Ellerslie at a mile and a half and ten furlongs his connections fully expect him to run out these distances on "the other side," in a manner showing that in the Great Northern Derby he was not right at his best on the day. RACING PHOTOGRAPHY During the holiday racing there have again been differences of opinion in regard to the positions of leading contestants at the winning post. At Stratford the winning num hers for the Toko High Weight were hoisted no less than four times, before the correct combination was sorted out. Now has arisen another demand for the institution of photography to aid the judges, and also to satisfy the public as to the absolute correctness of the decisions. Which will be the first club in the Dominion to institute the new idea, remains to be seen. WILL DO BETTER Of the three Beau Pere colts at the recent Auckland fixture Mr T. W. Lowry's Bcaupartir ranked in third place. But the racing at Filers lie. so improved him that since returning to Awapuni he has been accounting for Catalogue in his track work. Thus it is assumed that Beaupartir will show up prominently at the Wellington Centennial meeting this week.
