NAKED AFFAIRS
Sir, —I quite agree with "Decency" that it should be compulsory for women to dress themselves decently in the street. Some girls present shocking figures in their abbreviated clothes. What woidd it look like to see men walking down the Strand clad only in singlet, brief shorts, and tennis shoes? They continue to dress sensibly. Some years ago in Australia a campaign was conducted for dress reform among men. It was stated then that the average weight of men's clothes was just on eight pounds, without the shoes. Again without the shoes it was found that women's dress varied between %lb and l^lbs. Men would have more reason to discard some of their clothes, because, on those figures, they carry about 61/2lbs more than the women. It is comforting to note, though, that respectable girls continue to dress in a manner in keeping with their place in society and it is only those girls who have no thought for other people and for themselves who appear in public with so little on. Yours etc., "MORE DECENCY" Sir, —Your correspondent "Decency" is evidently a prude. Such sentiments as conveyed in the. letter appearing over that Nom-de-plume in your issue of December 29th are Victorian and are in keeping with the minds responsible for the ridiculous 'neck-to-knee' bathing costume by-law which is still in existence at many places. "Decency" should realise that because a girl is dressed in less than your correspondent deems necessary, it does not follow that her mind is as brief. It would seem as though "Decency" 1 balances things in this respect. Yours etc., MODERN MISS.
