(By Zetland) lIE STAYED ON WELL Mr A. Dixon, sporting writer for the Star-Sun, Christehurch, lias retired fom the position, after serving as a journalist for the past 53 years. SUGAR AND MUSTARD A Wellington writer, probably im bued with the gay holiday spirit during the festive season resultant upon the gaiety of the Centennial; Exhibition in the Empire City, writes: "Duncannon Avon like a really good horse "when he landed the mustard at Awapuni, and there Avill be a ton of sugar for him at Trentham this month." LIGHTLY EXERCISED Defaulter is now being lightly exercised at Riecarton, but is so burly in condition that it may be a long time before he Avill again be asked to carry racing colour's. Wliether lie Avill be able to stand, a thorough preparation remains to be seen, and being a big-topped horse his trainer Avill naturally have to aAvait for the softening of the training tracks, tracks. WELLINGTON CENTENNIAL CUP Recent news from Sydney denotes that J. T. Jamieson, the well-ltnoAvn and successful trainer, Avill be represented in the Wellington Centennial Cup, of £3000 by the New Zealand bred, Malagigi. This Paladin representative is a Mitclielson Cup winner, and on New Year's Day was narrowly beaten at Randwick in the Tattersall's Gold Cup, of one mile and a half. This particular performance may have decided Jainiesan to make the trip to Wellington. A PROMISING THOROUGHBRED The winner of the Grey Handicap at the Auckland Summer Meeting, Te Kawiti, bids fair to become a good handicap performer. On the score of breeding he lacks little, for he is by Night Raid, sire of the famous Phar Lap, from the Lucul--1 us-March mare Queen March, whose progeny include good Avinners in King March, by Rossendale. Birthday Boy by Limond, Gay Marigold by Grand Knight, Pateem by Tidal, and Queen City by Iliad. STAMINA STRAINS After a ser.ies of no less than#eleven victories Beaulivre met his defeat in the Great Northern Derby, one mile and a half, Beau Yite being the victor. The latter was beaten in the King's Plate, one mile, on Boxing Day by Beaulivre, Avho ts one of the most brilliant colts ever paraded in NeAV Zealand. The Derby Avinner, had previously accounted for him at Trentham in the St. Leger, so there Avas ample ground for the opinion of T. George, trainer, that Beau Vite Avould thoroughly test the champion three year old, before the latter left for his Australian tour. On Thursday the pair again met, this time in the Clifford Plate, run over a mile and a quarter. Entering the straight Beaulivre was galloping so smoothly in his usual effortless style that a victory appeared more than likely, but at the distance post Beau Vite answering gamely to the call Avent on gallantly, and sustaining a really brilliant run Avon in a convincing manner.
