OVERSEAS TELEGRAMS

PARTIAL LIFTING OF CENSORSHIP SPECIFIED CODES PERMITTED ft is announced by the Controller of Censorship that, as from Monday last the Ist January, overseas telegrams in code may be exchanged with t,he folloAving Empire countries: —Australia, Canada, India. Paci fie islands (Samoa, Cook Islands and Tonga), South Africa, United Kingdom . Except in the case of the Pacific Island points, to Avhieh Bentley's Complete Phrase only is permitted, the, following published codes may be used unless othei'Avise indicated: Bentley's Complete Phrase, Bentley's Second Phrase, ABC Sixth Edition (except to India), Petersen's Third Edition (except to India and South Africa). Only one of the foregoing authorised codes may be used in any one telegram. The name of the code must be written on the telegram form by the sender, but no charge will be made for the transmission of such information. Senders must supply the translation Avritten on the back of the form or on a separate sheet of paper when the telegram is handed in. The usw of numerical equivalents or spareword additions for framing a private code is not permitted. All messages must be capable of being so decoded as to have a meaning clear to the Censor. Each outward code telegram Avill be subject to. a surcharge of Is, which is being imposed here and in •other Empire countries to offset to some extent the cost of the transmission of the translations from accepting offices to censorship stations and the expenditure Avhieh Avill be incurred in providing decoding staff For the present, the use of code addresses and code signatures is not permitted. To avoid delay, senders of messages in code should lodge their telegrams as early in the. day as possible.
