THE MAGINOT LINE
FULFILMENT OF A DREAM ORIGIN OF THE FORTIFICATION While the words "Maginot Line" are perhaps those which fall most frequently from the lips of Frenchmen to-day, not everyone remembers the circumstances under which this impregnable line of fortresses was constructed and the man to whom France owes her first line of defence. His name was Maginot; lie entered i the war in 19U as a private soldier. < He left the army as an invalid ser- ] geant, tormented Avith memories of 1 the ravages of men and laud which j had taken place on French soil. He < became Minister of' War and, from , that time never rested one moment I until the vast enterprise of I'ortifi- 1 cation he had conceived had been | voted and put under construction. ( The plans were partly his, partly ( those of Paul Painleve, then Pre- ! mier, whose scientific genius was 1 brought into play. 1 These two men between them ! created the bulwark which France 1 believes is impregnable, and which ' may prove more valuable to her ' than all her armies.
