STRONG COMPETITION
TAURANGA ROWING CONTESTS YOUTHS GOOD SHOWING The annual regatta staged by the Tauranga Rowing Club, took placc on Boxing Day and attracted no less than 5(5 crews and a total 235 oarsmen. Splendid competition resulted, and a gratifying standard reached in spite of the absence of many old performers who have join ed. the army. Whakatane entered four events, but Avas only able to notch a place in the 'Youths Fours' when W. Stubbs (stroke), R. Stewart (3), L. Carey (2) and H. Thorburn (bow) were placed third. The cox was G. Moore. In the Maiden Fours (under lOst) the local crew brought up the rear in an event of seven. The personnel were A. Head (stroke), F. Brown (3), W. Stubbs (2), H. Thorburn (bow) and G. Moore (cox). The Maiden double sculls saw N. Taylor (stroke) and V. Hayward pvdl into fourth place with G. Dines as cox. The heavy event (Maiden Fours, open) was a keen race, the Whakatane team coming in fourth ag&in with only a narrow margin separating the placed crcws. The local competitors were L. Carey (stroke) N. Taylor (3), H. Armstrong (2), R. Stewart (bow). C. Dines was cox.
