HIGH SCHOOL

COMMERCIAL INSTRUCTION

RESULTS FOR YEAR

During the past year a regular cour.se of Commercial instruction ln book-keeping, shorthand ancl typewriting has been carried out at tin; Whakatane District High School. This work has been in the capable hands of Mrs D. Pearse, part-time instructress. Evidently this course finds lavour with the parents in the district as over -10 pupils have been enrolled. In spite of lack of accommodation and inadequate equipment fine progress has been made. At the November examinations conducted by the Auckland Education Board all candidates obtained sucj cesses of some description. I Next year the roll promises to be still larger and a commercial room has been provided for in the plans of the coming extension. Now Miat a sound foundation has been laid it is expected that the standard of work will improve rapidly. Many openings are available for trained pupils. Unfortunately, however, few stay long enough to get the full benefit of the course. Only a limited time each week can be given, to this work in Secondary Schools as many other subjects have to be taken as well, and rightly so, as the function of such schools is to give a wide education. Conditions in a Business College arc entirely different. Here everything is concentrated on the immediate end in view and progress in the narrower field should be much more rapid. It behoves parents to realise this and where possible to allow their children tosstarj r at school long enough to reap the full benefit. The time has now come when evening commercial' classes in Whakatane have become a necessity— few towns of this size are Avithout them, it is hoped to establish them in the coming year.
