INTOXICATED DRIVER
MAORI'S DRUNKEN SPREE
SEQUEL TO AWAKERI ACCIDENT
Looking particularly sorry for himself a Maori from Waiohou who £ippeared before Messrs G. Brabant and R.W. Schofield, J.Ps, pleaded guilty to a series of offences leading up to an accident on the Awa-keri-Taneatua Road on Christmas eve. The culprit Teroihi Rikiriki, had according to Sergeant Farrell who prosecuted become intoxicated while on a visit to Whakatane. In an endeavour to get home he had appropriated a car which was parked in the street, and drove off in the direction of Awakeri. At the junction of the Taneatua turnoff he had zig-zagged across the road in a dangerous manner and collided with a ear driven by Miss V. Villis of Awakeri. He had been arrested by Constables Prater and Wigmore who proceeded to the accident. Rikiriki was lined £25, for being intoxicated in charge of a car, £5 for unlawful conversion, and £1 for driving without a license. When other fees were added (court, medical and interpreters) his total penalty exceeded £34. Drunk and Disorderly. For being druplc and disorderly Mea Hohcpa, of Te Teko, was fined £2. Two other first offenders who had celebrated the season unwisely were lined 10s and 20s respectively. FIRST OFFENDER FINED Another first offender appeared: before Mr G. Brabant, J.P., yesterday, and was fined 10s.
