CONSTABLE T. J. CUMMINGS
WARM TRIBUTES FROM LEGAL FRATERNITY'
An informal gathering of members of the legal fraternity, the police force, traffic officers and other associate bodies took place last Monday evening, for the purpose of paying a warm tribute to the long term of service and the sterling worth to the town of Constable T. J. Cummings who has retired after
29 years of continuous residence in Whakatane.
The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, presided, and associated with him were Messrs R. F. Smith, C. A. Suckling E. Armstrong,, L. Buddie, G. Otley T. Hamerton (Taneatua) Solicitors, Constable F. Fuller, R. Prater, E. Wig more and O. Rice (Taneatua) police, Messrs G. A. Brabant, W. Sullivan, S. Moody and Hayward, Justices of the Peace, Messrs R. Fraser and T. W. Morgan, Clerks of Court, J. H. Delves, traffic inspector, R. Thom, Social Security Department and Dr F. J. Appleby.
Apologies for absence were received from Messrs F. Prideaux. J. Seering and G. G. Lucas.
In presenting Constable Cummings with a handsome chiming clock suitably inscribed, Mr Barry conveyed the good wishes of all present, referring to the fine record of service which he had to his credit and the deep regard the citizens of Whakatanc cherished towards both Mr and Mrs Cummings.
- Responding Constable Cummings said he appreciated the kindly expressions of goodwill more than he could possibly hope to convey. He had enjoyed his association, with Whakatanc and both he and Mrs Cummings would find it hard to settin down to a life of retirement.
Entertaining the gathering to some of the early tales of the town he said that Whakatanc was not always as law abiding as it is to-day, however he Avas glad to say that he had never knowingly made bad friends and could count himself Lucky in the great number of warm and lasting friendships he and his family now enjoyed.
