THE ROCK
(To Pohaturoa) There by the river winding to the sea, Cleft from the hills as by some mighty stroke That rends the heavens with flame It stands proof against Eternity. How stately, the mossy sides, V/ith tufted grasses in its crannied wall, How mighty thus it seems; and we—how small; And all the while the widening river glides On past the massive base. Immortal Rock, That has withstood the ravages of time, Seen long forgotten deeds cf peace and war, A sentinel to guard and block The gate-way to the plains. Firm and sublime It will remain when we shall be no more. A.J.S.
