NIGHT EXERCISES
LESSON IN TACTICS
TERRITORIALS AT WORK
Under Lieutenant J. Conolly and Second Lieutenant Brabant, two platoons of B Company, nth Hauraki Regiment (Territorials) exercised in tactics on Monday night in the vicinity of the Domain and the Show Grounds. The object was to clTect a withdrawal under fire.
The 'enemy', one section of a platoon, took up position in the Maraetotara Gorge and the main body was located in the Show Grounds. Using blank cartridges, the enemy kept up a steady fire as the main body retired under the covering fire of two sections. Taking up their position, the retiring force engaged the 'enemy' while the covering sections withdrew. This was repeated until the complete withdrawal had been effected. Forty men, which is not the full strength of the platoons, attended the manoeuvres.
